May 2005

Buddy is already 35 pounds. We are going to Puppy Kindergarten at Paws University. It is a class to start obedience training for puppies. It is also a fun time for them to play with other dogs. Buddy has a girlfriend in class. Her name is Kukui and she and her family live less than 1/2 mile from us. Tim and Maki, Kukui's owners, are really nice. They have a great daughter who constantly gets knocked over by the running puppies in class. She never cries and is such a good sport.

The shower is done. In just 4 short months, I have a wonderful indoor shower. It was fun showering outdoors, but it is so much better to not have the construction going on in the house. I now don't have any excuse to not paint the bathroom. I painted the master bedroom in the apartment. The name of the color is rather unfortunate for Hawaii. It is called Tidalwave Blue. Oh, well. It looks nice and I also bought a new mirror for the room. I want to get a different bedding set since the room is blue.

We had great guests stay with us this month. We had Tony and Barbara from California. They kindly documented in our Birds of Hawaii book all of the birds they saw on our farm. We have a good variety here. Bob and Mette from Denmark were a fantastic couple. We enjoyed a fun cookout with them and they were very patient with Buddy. He got really attached to them and every time they came back to the farm, he went running to them. Paul and Susan, from Pennsylvania, also stayed with us before moving on to the cabins at the volcano.

My peas in my garden are done, so I need to put in some more seeds. We had a handful of strawberries. It is tough beating the birds and the bugs to them. The kabocha which is Japanese pumpkin is very tasty. However, just like our lychees and mangos they are suffering from the amount of rain we are receiving this spring. There is so much water going into the fruits and vegetables that they are literally bursting out of their skins. The lychees taste amazing even if the skin is split. Buddy likes them too. I have made stir fry with the green onions from the garden. I have to get better at planting just a few plants at a time. I have an entire row of green onions ready. I can only eat so many of those! We have lots of Hayden mangos. Todd picks baskets full and we give them to the guests, to our neighbor and to friends at the beach. Even with all of that picking we still have so many falling and rotting on the ground.

Todd continues on the pruning of the mac nut trees. He also is pruning the coffee trees. We have coffee cherry that is red already. We will be picking in July. Everyone's trees are getting ripe early this year. We have been consistantly getting rain in the afternoon and the mornings are sunny. Everything is growing like mad. Todd just loves cutting the grass. Our friend, BJ came over and helped Todd take out the transmission from the blue truck. BJ is going to see what is wrong with it and hopefully he will be able to fix it. Having a farm without a pickup truck is challenging. More good news, Charlie helped Todd push the blue truck into the corner of one of the coffee fields. We no longer have any lawn ornaments at then end of our driveway. Todd has even fixed the riding lawn mower that has been parked on our lanai. I am so happy. Todd is moving ahead on fixing the roof over our lanai. Tim gave us some flashing for the roof and Todd has started buying the things he needs to fix it. Before you know it we won't have to put buckets on the lanai to catch the rain water.

Our friend Grace had her parents visiting. It was nice to meet them. We had a cookout with them to celebrate Charlie's birthday. It is always hard to buy a gift for a man. So we gave him a gift that you can't go wrong with. Beer. I am taking an aerobic kickboxing class at the dance cooperative. It is a really cool place that offers all types of dance classes for adults and kids. The prices are great and the teacher who is from New Jersey has so much energy. It is a real challenge. Happy Birthday to Todd's brother, Scott.
