February 2008

Josephine can now sit up from crawling and start crawling from sitting. She is now waving, but not always at a person. She waves at plants and the dining room table. J got her two bottom teeth. A few nights before her teeth poked through her gums she was up eight times. That was a rough night. Poor baby, I bet adults couldn't handle teething. I took her to visit Tae Kwon Do class. It was nice to see everyone again. It feels like I have been away forever and have forgotten everything. Todd came by after wrestling which was really nice. Daddy took Josephine to the beach for breakfast a few times this month. J also went to work with Todd a few times and roasted coffee. I am not trying to rush J into potty training, but I read this article at her doctor's office that made a lot of sense to me. In other countries, babies are potty trained by parents putting them on the potty when they make "the face." The babies are also taken into the bathroom and put on the potty when the mommy or daddy go to the bathroom. That might not sound too great to some people, but when you think about it logically, it makes so much sense. Your baby learns by watching and copying you. Since J can sit up by herself, I bought her a potty. She sat on hit once, but didn't produce anything yet. I figured when she makes her face, we will try it. We aren't putting any pressure on her, just letting her check it out. Josephine had her well doctor visit for another shot. She didn't cry which was great. The nurses were impressed. She was 17 pounds, 2 ounces and 27 inches long. Dr. Derieg stood Josephine up and let her lean on a chair. Todd and I didn't know she could stand if she leaned on something. When we got home, I stood her up at her music activity table and she loved it. She changed so much this month. Baby slow down! Momma is not ready. J had a wonderful first Valentine's Day. She received many cards and gifts from her family and friends. Todd gave me a very cute card that even Josephine signed.

We had a fun superbowl party at our house. Charlie, Grace, Mike and Crystal and their dogs came over. Strangely enough, I enjoyed watching the game. The commercials were a disappointment. The day was sort of cloudy and overcast, so it was good we weren't missing a good beach day to watch football. I think I forgot to mention that half of one of my molars broke off last month. I don't like our dentist, but I had to get it fixed. Luckily, I wasn't in pain. He said I needed a crown and that a gold one lasts longer and costs the same a porcelain one. I took the gold one. My dentist runs his office like a factory. He has so many patients all waiting in different little rooms and he is in such a rush. He doesn't tell you what he is doing or that something is going to pull, taste awful or whatever. It was a traumatic experience. My temporary was too high, so I had to get in ground down. They put so much crap in your mouth that smells and tastes terrible. Your mouth is all numb and they get mad at you if you don't bite down right on the mold. Man, they forget they are dealing with people. He is totally not suited to be a doctor. He should find a new profession. The only upside is my tooth feels good so far.

We had a great family stay with us from Canada. Their luggage didn't make the trip with them right away but it was delivered the next morning. They were on the go to different beaches most days. We had repeat guests from last year about this time. They are such a thoughtful couple. They gave us baby clothes the last time they were here and this time, they brought Josephine a huge teddy bear. She didn't know quite what to make of him. I think she will warm up to him once she is a little older.

Todd has been on the other side of the island this month for wrestling. He has to leave by five in the morning and then is not back to ten at night. We miss him, but thank goodness there are only two more months of wrestling. Todd gave me the news that they may also have dual meets during the week next year. I don't know if I would survive wrestling season next year.

The coffee trees are flowering. They smell so good. Unfortunately, I think fig season is over. We enjoyed some of our cocoa this year. You can suck the sweet fruity covering off the seeds inside the cocoa pod. It is tasty, but doesn't have a chocolate flavor. Todd is spraying for coqui frogs at the top of our road near SKEA and the potters guild. He hopes to stop their progress down the hill.

For the first time in a long time, we all went to roast coffee together. Bob and Beryl were supposed to go to the beach for a cookout, but decided to stay home since the weather looked like rain. I hulled the coffee. Todd sorted and roasted and Josephine supervised and slept. I can't believe she can sleep with all the noise and the floor shaking when at home my ankle can crack when I walk by her room and she will wake up screaming. It ended up getting pretty late until we were done, but we had to take J inside to visit with Aunty Beryl. Of course they fed us dinner and Beryl played with Josephine. It was a fun evening.

Todd left for the state wrestling tournament on Oahu on the 28th. So Josephine and I are on our own until Sunday night. We went to cookout on Friday night at Kealakekua Bay with Charlie, Grace, Candy, Mark and Mary to do some planning for Grace and Charlie's wedding there on March 15. Josephine just loves Candy. She could make her laugh so easily. She also liked Mark. I wasn't sure if I was going to get my baby back to go home. Just like when we were getting ready to leave for the mainland, both Buddy and Louie had issues. Louie is itching like crazy and the morning of the 28th, Buddy could barely stand up. Todd made an emergency vet visit before his flight. Louie has allergies and we need to give him Benydryl and baths in medicated shampoo. The vet thought Buddy was hit by a car. We don't think that is possible, but he may have fallen when he was out chasing a mongoose or something. He also had a broken toe nail on his back paw. So Buddy has pain killers. Thank goodness they are chewable. Buddy is a terrible pill taker and I didn't want to have to do that while Todd was away. Buddy is now back to normal.

Happy Birthday to Todd's sister, Lisa. Happy Valentine's Day and Happy Leap Year everyone.
