February 2007

I am still feeling good this month. I am sure that will change as I get closer to the end of the third trimester when the most significant growth takes place. I had to get another blood test. Oh yippy. This time it was the glucose screen. You get to drink 10 ounces of slimy orange flavored sugar liquid in 15 minutes. You then sit around trying not to throw up while you enjoy a massive sugar rush. Next you get stabbed in the arm to get blood removed. Todd has been so good. He goes with me to all of these extremely unpleasant appointments. The good news is that I do not have gestational diabetes and I do not have to go on for the three hour glucose test. My college roommate, Jodi, arrived on February 6th. She is staying with us for this month and then moving down to our friend's farm. She is planning to stay until the end of May. Her sister just had her second baby so Jodi is well versed in diaper changing, burping, etc. Todd had to finish up the baby's room at least to a point since Jodi was going to be staying in that room. When I left for the airport to get Jodi, Todd was still at wrestling practice. The room still had tools on the floor, dirt and there was no bed put together. When we got back the baby's room looked so nice. Todd put in an area carpet, setup the bed and put in a night stand and lamp. It was a nice preview as to what our daughter's room will look like.

It has been great to have Jodi here. She is helping Todd on the farm and she goes shopping with me and to belly dancing and yoga. We went baby shopping and drove over to Hilo together on one of the weekends that Todd was over there for wrestling. We went to Sears to check out the baby stuff. I am so glad Todd talked me out of the great need that I was experiencing to make a special trip over there. The baby selection at Sears was small and not worth the drive to Hilo. I did get bibs from Sears that say "I love Daddy". I think Todd liked the bibs since all the I love bibs we had so far said Mommy. We also ate at Ken's House of Pancakes. For some reason I always forget that it is not that good. Oh well, we needed to eat and we wanted to get back on the long road home. I must mention this horrible woman that Jodi and I saw at the Punalu'u black sand beach on our way to Hilo. She was actually out in the tidepool picking up a turtle by its flippers. Too bad the turtle didn't take off one of her hands to teach her a lesson. I am glad a Hawaiian guy came over and yelled at her. I can't believe the stupidity of some people.

Congratulations to the Konawaena wrestling team for winning the Big Island championship. Jodi and I went to the championship since this year Todd's school hosted it. We also baked for hours on Friday to do our part for the concession stand. It is so funny. We made breakfast cake which is a coffee cake. The ladies at the concession stand sold it as banana bread. It sold, so I guess no one noticed there were no bananas in it. I did tell Todd to mark the snickerdoodle cookies as cinnamon sugar cookies since I doubted anyone in Hawaii knows snickerdoodle cookies. The tournament was really close, but they ended up winning which was fantastic. The boys and the girls were all smiles. They still have work ahead of them to get ready for the state championship in Honolulu the first weekend of March. So this means I will not see Todd until somewhere around March 4.

This month our four other Canadian guests arrived. They are quite a fun loving bunch. I don't know if I could vacation with friends for a month, but they seem to have no troubles. It is hard enough for me to get Todd and the dogs in the car on time when we want to go somewhere.

Jodi and I saw whales when we were at the Place of Refuge. The weather was cloudy and cool and I was just about to ask if she wanted to leave when we saw them swimming by. They were the closest to the beach that I have ever seen. They looked huge. We had a farewell dinner for Ira and Carol who moved to Alaska on February 28. We will miss them, but Carol says she will be back to Hawaii this coming winter. Ira, on the other hand, is looking forward to the cold weather. Todd's cousin, Stacy and her new husband, Ed stopped by while on their honeymoon. We only visited briefly since they were on their way to Volcano. My family had a baby shower for me on February 25 in Pennsylvania. It was really sweet that they did that for me even though I couldn't be there. It was sad I didn't get to see my family or experience a baby shower. I think that one of the things that bothers me the most is that my mom will not see me pregnant and she won't be able to feel the baby move. We send pictures and talk on the phone, but it is not the same. Happy Birthday to Todd's sister Lisa. Lisa, Jim, Jessica and Sarah have sent so many gifts for the baby. We have lots of clothes, blankets, books and even instructions from Jim on how Todd should change a diaper. Jim instructed Todd to tear off two pieces of the baby wipe and stuff them up his nose in order to handle the smell. I hope Todd can handle it. Poop is one thing that really grosses him out. At least he has several months before she eats any solid food which is when I heard it gets nasty. Enough poop talk for now. We are all doing well and no we still don't have a name picked out.
